Patient Support

Cancer, if hereditary, may concern both patients and their family members. Together with Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, genetics screening, diagnosis and counselling are provided to individuals with a family history of hereditary cancers, e.g. breast, ovarian and colorectal cancers.

Patients with persistent cancer pain may require integrated multidisciplinary treatments combining the efforts of wide-ranging specialties. Individualised comprehensive treatment is provided according to the patient’s conditions. For more information, please click here.

Improvements in cancer diagnosis and treatment have led to an increase in number of people surviving and living longer. A new strategy to fight cancer is to focus on restoring health and quality of life. Despite improved survival, patients still need to face various problems from the disease itself and the side effects of the treatments. These include cancer-related fatigue, muscle loss, lymphedema, radiation-induced fibrosis, etc. Some of these problems may last for years. It hinders patients from resuming their normal daily routine. It also affects some patients’ ability to return to work. Our physiotherapists can provide an integrated and individualised rehabilitation programme to identify, address and mitigate these difficulties throughout the recovery journey. Dietetic services are available for patients during treatment in order to ensure that their nutritional status and/or symptoms are monitored, maintained or improved wherever possible. Our Registered Dietitians will assess the nutritional needs and recommend appropriate nutritional treatment for referred patients. Dietitians will evaluate and monitor dietetic intervention to help ensure a positive effect on patients’ nutritional status, aid the recovery process, control symptoms and improve wellbeing.

The Clinical Health Psychology Centre works in close collaboration with the Comprehensive Oncology Centre to enhance the coping skills of cancer patients. Monthly psycho-educational talks will be delivered to patients and their carers. A free session is also offered on request to individuals in need during the treatment period.

First organised by HKSH Comprehensive Oncology Centre (Happy Valley) in 2009, our patient support group has long been providing a safe occasion for patients to connect with others, share coping strategies and promote mutual emotional support. Essential to the group are cancer survivors and their relatives, who provide companionship and reassurance to other cancer patients and their carers with their own experience. Clinical and Health Psychologists are also invited to give advice to patients and their carers in the group to facilitate the patient journey.
